PHYSIOTHERAPY

BOOK ONLINE

Picture
Physiotherapy is an evidence-informed healthcare profession focused on helping people restore movement, improve function, manage pain and recover from injury, illness or surgery.

At Back Be Nimble Wellness Collective, physiotherapy begins with understanding you — what is bothering you, how it is affecting your everyday life and what you would like to be able to do more comfortably or confidently.

Whether you're dealing with a new injury, persistent pain, reduced mobility, recovering from surgery, or hoping to return safely to work, recreation or sport, your physiotherapist will assess your movement and function and develop an individualized treatment plan based on your needs and goals.

Treatment may combine hands-on techniques, therapeutic exercise, education, physical modalities and progressive rehabilitation. Just as importantly, you'll be given the tools and guidance to actively participate in your recovery.

Our Physiotherapist is an experienced healthcare professional who works with each client to identify their individual needs, establish meaningful treatment goals, and develop a personalized plan for recovery and rehabilitation. Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing pain or reduced mobility, or working toward returning to the activities you enjoy, Physiotherapy can help you move better, restore function, and feel more confident in your movement.

- YOUR FIRST VISIT -

Your initial Physiotherapy appointment is a 60-minute session designed to give your physiotherapist time to understand your concerns, complete an appropriate physical assessment and establish a treatment plan.

Your first visit may include:
  • health and injury history
  • discussion of your symptoms, activities and treatment goals
  • movement and functional assessment
  • range of motion, strength and flexibility testing
  • neurological or orthopaedic testing when indicated
  • discussion of assessment findings
  • initial treatment when appropriate
  • development of an individualized treatment plan
  • home exercise and self-management recommendations

- FOLLOW-UP TREATMENTS -

Follow-up Physiotherapy appointments build on the findings and treatment plan established during your initial assessment.

Your physiotherapist will monitor your response to treatment, reassess relevant findings and adjust your rehabilitation program as you progress.

Follow-up appointments may include:
  • reassessment of symptoms and function
  • hands-on treatment
  • progressive therapeutic exercise
  • strength, mobility and balance training
  • functional rehabilitation
  • physical modalities when appropriate
  • education and self-management strategies
  • updates to your home exercise program

Progress toward your goals is continually evaluated so that treatment can be modified as your needs change.

HOW PHYSIOTHERAPY CAN HELP
Physiotherapy can help with much more than recovering from an injury. It can be used to improve mobility and physical function, manage acute or persistent pain, restore strength and confidence with movement, and help prevent recurring problems. Physiotherapy may be helpful for:
  • Back & Neck Pain: Assessment and treatment can help identify factors contributing to spinal pain, stiffness, reduced mobility or difficulty with everyday activities.
  • Muscle, Tendon & Joint Injuries: Physiotherapy can support recovery from sprains, strains, tendinopathies and other musculoskeletal injuries while progressively restoring strength and movement.
  • Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist & Hand Conditions: Treatment can address pain, weakness, restricted movement and functional limitations affecting the upper extremity.
  • Hip, Knee, Ankle & Foot Conditions: Physiotherapy can help improve mobility, strength, balance and function following injury or when dealing with ongoing joint or soft-tissue concerns.
  • Sports & Recreational Injuries: Rehabilitation can help you recover from injury and progressively return to the activities and sports that are important to you.
  • Pre- & Post-Surgical Rehabilitation: Physiotherapy can help prepare the body for surgery and support recovery afterward by restoring movement, strength and function.
  • Arthritis & Joint Stiffness: Individualized exercise, education and treatment can help maintain mobility, build strength and improve everyday function.
  • Persistent or Recurring Pain: Physiotherapy can help you better understand contributing factors and develop strategies for gradually improving movement, capacity and confidence.
  • Balance, Mobility & Fall Prevention: Strength, balance and functional training can help improve stability, mobility and confidence with everyday movement.
  • Motor Vehicle & Workplace Injuries: Physiotherapy can support recovery following injuries such as whiplash, strains and other musculoskeletal conditions and help with a progressive return to usual activities.
  • Deconditioning & Reduced Physical Function: Individualized rehabilitation can help rebuild strength, endurance and confidence following illness, injury or periods of reduced activity.
TREATMENT APPROACHES
Picture
Physiotherapy isn't one particular treatment or technique. Your treatment plan is developed following assessment and may evolve as your symptoms, function and goals change.

Depending on your individual needs, treatment may include:

Manual Therapy
Hands-on techniques may be used to address joint or soft-tissue restrictions, improve mobility and help manage symptoms.

Therapeutic Exercise
Individualized exercises may be prescribed to improve strength, mobility, flexibility, balance, endurance and overall physical function.

Progressive Rehabilitation
Exercises and activities are gradually progressed to help bridge the gap between early recovery and the demands of everyday life, work, recreation or sport.

Soft Tissue Techniques
Hands-on techniques may be incorporated to address muscle and soft-tissue restrictions as part of a broader rehabilitation program.

Neuromuscular & Movement Retraining
Movement patterns, coordination, balance and body mechanics may be addressed to improve efficiency and confidence with movement.

Education & Self-Management
Understanding your condition and knowing what you can safely do between appointments are important parts of rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist may provide guidance around activity modification, pacing, ergonomics and strategies for managing symptoms.

Home Exercise Programming
When appropriate, you'll receive an individualized home exercise program to complement your in-clinic treatment. Exercises may be provided digitally through Wibbi, allowing you to easily access your prescribed exercises and instructions between visits.

Electrotherapy
Interferential current (IFC) or other forms of therapeutic electrical stimulation may be incorporated when clinically appropriate to assist with symptom management as part of your overall treatment plan.

Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound may be used selectively as an adjunct to treatment when clinically indicated.

Heat Therapy
Moist heat may be incorporated when appropriate to help prepare tissues for treatment or exercise and assist with short-term symptom management.

The goal is not simply to provide temporary symptom relief, but to help you improve your physical capacity and confidently return to the activities that matter to you.

FAQS
▪️ DO I NEED A DOCTOR'S REFERRAL?
A referral is not required to book an appointment with a physiotherapist. However, some extended health benefit plans may require a referral or prescription in order to reimburse Physiotherapy expenses. We recommend checking the requirements of your individual insurance plan before your first appointment.

▪️ IS PHYSIOTHERAPY COVERED BY MY HEALTH BENEFITS?
Many extended health benefit plans include coverage for Physiotherapy. Coverage limits, referral requirements and direct-billing eligibility vary by insurer and individual policy, so we recommend confirming your coverage with your insurance provider.

▪️ IS PHYSIOTHERAPY COVERED BY ALBERTA HEALTH CARE?
Physiotherapy provided at Back Be Nimble Wellness Collective is not covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). Alberta Health Services (AHS) does provide publicly funded Physiotherapy for certain eligible conditions and individuals through AHS facilities and contracted community providers. Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for private Physiotherapy services. We recommend checking your individual plan for coverage details, referral requirements, and annual limits.

▪️ DO YOU OFFER DIRECT BILLING?
Direct billing is available for many insurance providers and benefit plans. Coverage and eligibility vary by individual insurance plan and cannot be guaranteed. Our team is happy to assist you in navigating your benefits and determining your available coverage whenever possible.

▪️ WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY APPOINTMENT?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and enables your physiotherapist to appropriately assess the area being treated.  Athletic clothing such as shorts, leggings, a T-shirt or tank top is often ideal.

▪️ WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?
Your first appointment is primarily an assessment. Your physiotherapist will discuss your health history, current symptoms and goals and then perform a physical assessment appropriate to your concern. Your findings and treatment options will be discussed with you, and treatment may begin during the first appointment when appropriate.

▪️ WILL I RECEIVE TREATMENT AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?
Usually, yes. However, the amount and type of treatment provided during your first visit will depend on the complexity of your assessment and your individual needs. A thorough assessment is important for determining an appropriate treatment approach.

▪️ WILL I BE GIVEN EXERCISES TO DO AT HOME?
Often, yes. Therapeutic exercise and active rehabilitation are important components of physiotherapy. When appropriate, your physiotherapist will develop a home exercise program that can be updated and progressed as your needs and abilities change.

▪️ HOW MANY PHYSIOTHERAPY APPOINTMENTS WILL I NEED?
There isn't one answer that applies to everyone. The number and frequency of appointments will depend on factors such as your condition, how long you've had symptoms, the extent of the injury, your treatment goals and how you respond to rehabilitation. Your physiotherapist will discuss the recommended treatment plan with you following your assessment and will reassess your progress throughout your care.

▪️ DOES PHYSIOTHERAPY HAVE TO HURT TO WORK?
No. Some assessment techniques, exercises or treatments may temporarily reproduce symptoms or create normal muscular soreness, but treatment does not need to be painful to be effective. Your physiotherapist will communicate with you throughout treatment and adjust techniques or exercises according to your response and comfort.

▪️ CAN I BOOK PHYSIOTHERAPY EVEN IF I'M NOT INJURED?
Absolutely! Physiotherapy can also help with mobility, strength, balance, physical conditioning, injury prevention and returning to activities that have become difficult or uncomfortable. You don't have to wait until something becomes a significant problem before seeking help.
